Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:10:26 GMT

By Acacia Coronado and Jake Bleiberg | Associated PressAUSTIN, Texas — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton teetered on the brink of impeachment Thursday after years of scandal, criminal charges and corruption accusations that the state’s Republican majority had largely met with silence until now.In an unanimous decision, a Republican-led House investigative committee that spent months quietly looking into Paxton recommended impeaching the state’s top lawyer. The House could vote on the recommendation as soon as Friday. If it impeaches Paxton, he would be forced to leave office immediately. The move sets set up what could be a remarkably sudden downfall for one of the GOP’s most prominent legal combatants, who in 2020 asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Joe Biden’s victory. Only two officials in Texas’ nearly 200-year history have been impeached.Paxton has been under FBI investigation for years over accusations that he used his office to help a donor a...

MILWAUKEE — A vote on the Oakland Athletics’ possible move to Las Vegas could happen within a month, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday on a visit here that coincided with the start of the San Francisco Giants’ series against the Brewers.“It’s possible that a relocation vote could happen as early as June,” Manfred said. While there remain steps to be taken, Manfred said he was “optimistic” about the A’s finalizing a public-financing deal with Nevada lawmakers that would pave the way for the move. On Wednesday, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo announced a tentative agreement with the club, however it must still be approved by state legislators. The A’s have come to agreements on multiple potential sites for a new stadium in the past month, first on a 49-acre parcel north of the Raiders’ new home and, this week, one on the strip, on the Tropicana Las Vegas property. Read more Letters to the Editor.Call to remake courtproves Lee is unfitRe: “Lee urges an overhaul of Supreme Court” (Page B3, May 23).In her call to “overhaul” the U.S. Supreme Court Barbara Lee follows the playbook of typical South American dictators: First, vilify the courts with baseless accusations, then stack the legislative bodies with like-minded cronies, and then stack the court with hand-chosen puppets. Next Lee will be saying how the U.S. Constitution needs to be “modernized,” which can’t happen until the Supreme Court is firmly under the control of Congress. The separation of powers is a pillar of our democracy, without which the ruling party gains unlimited power. It is Lee and the progressives who are the very real and sinister threat to our democracy, who want to silence any opposition and put more power into the hands of the federal autocrats.Lee is unfit for any political position, and it would be a great tra...

Report: Trump had Mar-a-Lago staff move boxes before DOJ visit

By Kaanita Iyer | CNNTwo employees of Donald Trump moved boxes of papers at Mar-a-Lago a day before the Justice Department visited the former president’s residence to collect classified documents , The Washington Post reported Thursday. The Post, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that investigators view the timing – just before FBI agents and a prosecutor visited the Florida resort to recover the documents sought as part of a subpoena – as a potential sign of obstruction.Investigators have evidence, the newspaper reported, that the former president kept classified documents in a visible place in his office and had shown them to others. He also allegedly conducted “a ‘dress rehearsal’ for moving sensitive papers” along with his team before they were subpoenaed in May 2022, according to the report.CNN previously reported that following the May 2022 subpoena – which former president wanted to fight – federal prosecutors had a June meeting at Mar-a-Lago during which they w...

They are on top of the other budgeted positions.”Each office will get money for five new attorneys. County officials have said there is a good chance dozens — if not hundreds or more — of previous convictions could be overturned in light of the alleged police misconduct. Those new hires — who represent the beginning of the scandal’s impact on Contra Costa County taxpayers — will work to sort out...
